review 1: I found this book to be fairly interesting in the beginning but it tends to be fairly dry and boring in the middle and ending. There was a lot of description about life in St.Johns in the 1950s and the strength of the Catholic church over its congregation and this description carried throughout the novel but I found there is a lot of reading between interesting points in the book which caused me to lose interest often and I found it difficult to finish the novel.
review 2: The book started out a little slow but improved as I got into into it. It is the story of a disfigured boy and the bullying he endures from everyone. He comes from an unusual family situation and attends a strict catholic school in Newfoundland. He tends to act out as bad attention is better
... more than no attention. The story is somewhat twisted and is full of dark humour. It was an enjoyable and bizarre read. less

Absolutely marvellous book. Probably the best ending, in more ways than one, that I've ever read!

Very strange story, drags out story, lacking true humour. Did not enjoy this book at all.
