review 1: Sammy Keyes is an absolute rock star who can do no wrong, & as her character develops further in each book, I come to love her even more. Sammy & the gang all know that Santa Martina is home to any number of unusual people & "characters." You don't have to go very far to figure that out. But they've recently run across a startlingly unique local resident while celebrating a Dutch Christmas at their friend Dot's house out in the boonies - a young man who acts as an honest-to-goodness local superhero, complete with crime-fighting outfit, a dirt bike with a sidecar for his sidekick, & a snappy name for himself - Justice Jack. He's trying to prove that being a do-gooder is awesome, & the residents are eating it up, with the notable exception of Sammy's friend on the force, Off... moreicer Borsch. He informs her that, although Justice Jack is currently a little infatuated with what he's heard of her & may be attempting to convince her to be his sidekick, she is to stay away from him no matter what. Of course, Officer Borsch may just be frustrated that crime has actually gone up a little since Justice Jack's appearance on the scene: for instance, there's the mystery of exactly who stole the tacky larger-than-life bronze statue of softball players that lives in City Hall - & exactly how they managed it. Of course, nobody could expect Sammy to stay away from that kind of problem, even if her own personal life is still definitely on the chaotic side.I can only hope Wendelin Van Draanen writes a hundred books about Sammy.
review 2: The Sammy Keyes books are always good to recommend to pre-teen and teenage girls. Told in the first person, the story has humor, usual and unusual adolescent problems and relationships, and just a touch of romance (nothing more than the occasional kiss). This is one of the very few series where I've read every book--they're that good. Encourage girls to start with Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief, which sets the scene for all the subsequent books. After that, it's helpful but not essential to read them in order. less
