review 1: Charmaine Digby has a unique gift. She can tell when someone is lying. But that doesn't help her pay the bills. Until she lands a job in the County Coroner office. She's thrilled with her new job until the town's Story Lady dies under suspicious circumstances while in the hospital. Char soon learns Trudy isn't the olny patient to die this way. She never would have dreamed her first case could involve a serial killer! This was a really good story. Charmaine Digby is unlike most protagonists not only in the fact that she has the gift of telling a lie from the truth, but she is also a "real" sized woman and isn't a size 2 or 4. I admire Ms. Delaney's choice in that respect. I alway enjoy a book a bit more when I can relate to the main character in some way.The story had a grea... moret plot and flowed fast without leaving you wondering if you had missed something. I was always ready to turn the next page even though I didn't want the book to end.I can see why this was an award-winning book for the author. Fingers crossed that means a Volume 2 is soon to follow!
review 2: Charmaine Digby has returned to her hometown after a divorce. Because of her lifelong reputation as a human lie-detector, the County Coroner has hired her as an investigative assistant. When several hospital patients die in suspicious circumstances, Char finds herself on the trail of a killer. Detective Steve Sixkiller wishes she would stay out of things, but Char can't leave the case, or him, alone. This is undoubtedly the most fun I've had reading in a long time. Wendy Delaney's Char Digby tosses off one-liners and puns like a comedian. An amateur detective who reads expressions in order to catch a suspect in a lie was definitely a nice touch. The story is filled with plenty of quirky small-town characters and much of the action takes place in the local meeting place, a cafe owned by Char's great-uncle. This is definitely my new favorite cozy-mystery series.5 starsI received this book from Great Escapes Book Tours book bloggers program to read and review.
