review 1: Holy shit did I love this book. The plot kept me hooked through out, and every time I thought I knew what was going on, I'd find out it was all just a new part of the game. The build up and execution were done perfectly, the build up never feeling dragged out, and the execution didn't feel rushed. That's not to say it wasn't fast, because towards the end the book it hits the gas pedal and I was flipping pages faster than I knew I actually could. Lavender does a great job of showing a darker side to literature, and those of us who love and obsess over it. I could feel myself being sucked into the Fallows mystery just like the characters were, trying to decipher the meanings of the texts and the Procedure right along with them. I was not disappointed. As I read the last page... more, the last sentence I put the book down and just said "Masterpiece."
review 2: Meh. Spent much of this novel begging for an editor, and much more of it wondering how on earth the protagonist made it all the way to Harvard. Seriously. She's not that bright. Nor is the "puzzle" very logical or intriguing- I mean, a game that drives people to murder? Idk. There was a lot that went unexplained, such as Alex's rise to the top, or the Procedure itself (it's important, so I figured it should at least be explained...?), stuff like that. Most I can say is that the premise itself was good enough to keep me reading. But it's not one I'd recommend. less

Not as good as Obedience. But still an interesting perspective.

This dragged and really did not live up to my expectations.

meh. Lavender's first mystery Obedience was much better.

A good, creepy mystery with a *yikes* ending!
