review 1: Both Will Lavender thrillers to date (this one and Obedience) are frustrating experiences: brainy and intriguing premises that slowly dissolve into silliness and cliche. That's a shame, because he's got a talent for creating a truly creepy first act, full of ambiguity and shifting truths. But a mediocre mystery is like a magic trick revealed: not only is the truth usually dull, but it negates the joy that the trick delivered in the first place. Perhaps with his next novel, I will read only the first 75 pages and then have fabulous nightmares about what happens next.
