The Gateway celebrated its 16th birthday last week, and local party starters, Port Juvee, helped them light it up. I hadn’t seen these guys play since before their latest release, Crimewave, and it was like reuniting with an old friend who only got better with age. Their reverb heavy licks kept me dancing the whole set. If you told me about a band that fused surf-drenched garage rock with 80’s new wave, sprinkling on some post-punk finesse and bite, I would probably tell you to that is way too many words. But Port Juvee does all of that, and they do it phenomenally.
These guys put on one of the best shows I’ve seen, it doesn’t surprise me at all they are one of the biggest bands in the city. Frontman, Brett Sandford, has the most unorthodox, unapologetically cool stage presence, which has only proven better each time I see them. If you haven’t listened to Crimewave, do yourself a solid and do it. Right now. Seriously stop reading this and listen. Since last Wednesday I’ve had the whole EP on repeat. Double Vision is my favourite track, but it’s a non-stop banger end to end. Check them out here!
