review 1: Life in south Carolina is good. Having retired from the army as a Corporal, John is at peace as much as possible with his beloved Mary gone now for 4 years and his sweet 12 year old Jennifer dealing with her diabetes. When the lights go out everyone groans and prepares to carry on until they come back on. But when John tries to call the power company to let them know they need attention, and neither his house phone or his cell phone work, and then the kids come in to say that it's really weird because there is no sound coming from the freeway, John is very wary that this might be the dreaded EMP strike from an enemy. When his mother-in-law drives up in her old Edsel, his greatest fears are confirmed, but her car does turn out to be a godsend, allowing him to dash to town ... moreto get extra insulin and candy bars for Jennifer. As things start to fall apart around them; looting taking place and robberies of drugs from the nursing home; and people dying at a very rapid rate because of lack of oxygen at first and then lack of their proper med's as time goes on - John finds himself on the newly formed council to deal with issues they never thought they would see in their lifetime. Living now with conditions of 5&600 years ago, people find themselves struggling for survival. Will this end? If so, when? And how long will he have Jennifer?
review 2: Looks like people either really like or really dislike this book...not too many 3 stars. I can't comment on the grammar...I listened to the audio book, and there weren't too many glaring imperfections...probably because the narrators seem to make corrections, or make the conversation flow. I finished listening this last month just prior to some national news interviews that focused on the real vulnerability that we have to an EMP attack...How timely! I enjoyed it because it made me think about how much society could easily be changed...how reliant we are on all our modern conveniences. less

Chilling, an account of a very real/possible scenario. I recommend this read wholeheartedly.

This book is more my husband's type than my own. But I enjoyed it anyway.
