review 1: A murder mystery set in 1968 London. Detective Sergeant Breen is on the case and brings his own troubles into the story: he is somewhat of a throwback who doesn't fit into his time. The plot moves along nicely with enough tension to keep the pages turning. Without giving anything away, the ending was an unpleasant turn of events that made me doubt this author's motives. Still this book was a good enough police procedural with plenty of authentic local color.
review 2: Published in the UK as A Song From Dead Lips, She's Leaving Home has a great setting and a good premise - swinging London in the 1960s, and a detective sergeant and a constable who have something of a generation gap between them. Cathal Breen is in his 30s, somewhat distant from the cultural
... more turbulence of the era; Helen Tozer is in her 20s and speaks the idiom of the times, a fan of the "fab" groups the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. They investigate the murder of a young Beatles fan whose body is found not far from Abbey Road studios. Although they irritate one another at first, they develop a rapport based on shared experiences, some quite unpleasant, as they follow different leads to find the killer. Shaw painstakingly details the racism and sexism of the times (for example, Tozer is always asked to make tea, and women police constables are not permitted to drive); the atmospherics are terrific. Looking forward to another installment, as Mulholland Books plans to publish at least three in this series. less
