review 1: I would have given this book 5 stars because I laughed and cried and learned more history and generally it was lovely. After the death of the King, the book descends into a telling of the Queen Mother's charitable causes, which became less interesting than her youth, marriage and the subsequent abdication which led to their becoming king and queen, as well as the fascinating wartime years that made her great. But it truly is a tale of a woman who endured and helped others endure. Fantastic!

Covering the century plus of his subject's life, Shawcross did a good job of describing what was going on during the various decades that ... morethe book spanned. I became more acutely aware of the poverty of the Brits after WWII and developed a greater respect for the Queen Mother. What a fascinating life to have lived! less
