review 1: First-person, present-tense narrative set in a bleak town where all the houses look alike and the narrator hates living there and dealing with an incomprehensible “they” making rules about where not to go--at first this sounds like another dystopian YA novel, but it’s set in the present, with mobile phones, television, Google, and a Rafael Nadal poster on the bedroom wall. The only mention of actual places comes in the Author’s Note at the end, but readers with any knowledge of world events should have made the connection long before that. The fact that the narrator often makes the kinds of mistakes any 13-year-old might adds to the realism. He wants to do the right thing, but the right thing is never straightforward, and his choices can get others into trouble bes... moreides himself. So it’s an effective coming-of-age novel, deserving of its recognition on the Guardian and Carnegie lists.
review 2: Best book I've read this year! Compelling story about the complexities of living in an occupied territory, complete with the fear of "the enemy" felt by both the occupiers and the occupied. While adults will recognize this as the current conflict in the West Bank, the author does not completely lay this out, making it possible for readers to think about any of the conflicts we face -- some that do not have the obvious physical Wall to define it. less
