review 1: Shortlisted by the prestigious UK Carnegie Award for 2014, The Wall is a stunningly written novel about a boy called Joshua living in a town separated by a wall. When he finds a tunnel while searching for his soccer ball on an abandoned building site, his life changes forever. He sees what is on the other side of the wall, and is shocked by what he finds. His eyes are opened to the truth and the kindness he discovers shapes the rest of the story and his life. Joshua is a very real character, torn between beliefs he has grown up with and what he has learnt for himself. His growth as a character is wonderfully written, through all his trials along the way.
review 2: This book will rip your heart out. The first person narrative is electrifying, raw and I started
... moreto become pretty sure that Amarias was a real place. The main character had a very authentic voice but (spoiler alert)I just did not buy the paralysis at the end..I think it was mean to be a symbol of internal/societal paralysis but it didn't ring true for me, perhaps if it happened earlier but it just came across as a convenient plot device liek in What Katy Did. As it's YA it was obvious that the character wouldn't die but surely there could be a much braver way to resolve the issues raised? less

This is your basic coming of age story. Joshua's naivety is boundless.

Pretty good writing, but a boring story. unrealistically optimistic.
