review 1: God what a vivid writer: what descriptive powers, what wisdom about people. The aging poet's "vermicelli legs" (I have them too, without the benefit of the poetry) stick out, but the startling images (makes me think of Stephen Crane, for some reason) come in every sentence. The story doesn't have much forward drive, but it doesn't need to, there is so much life at every moment. A domestic drama in two vernaculars: Odessa and Little Odessa. No sentimentality, no nostalgic kitsch.
review 2: I was a goodreads first reads winner of the book "Panic in a Suitcase" I would give this book a *3.5* a fun read by the author. this is a fiction book about a Russian family who came to the USA in the early 1990s. It spans over about 20 years. there is some humor in this book
... moredescribing the relatives and the people they know. they live in Brooklyn N.Y. we follow this family and see their dreams and failings. the ups and downs they face. I read of the kids who grow up and face their own hopes and dreams. a nice read. by a talented young author. even though this a fiction book. I wonder if the author based some of the characters on real life relatives?I could be wrong about that. I just got the feeling these characters seemed like people she knew. a fun good read. less
