review 1: Small words, big feelings. The whole book is shrouded in ambiguity (two of the three main characters are nameless), and at its heart, its a pulpy romance with a fun little premise, namely mathematics. Don't expect much descriptive language, many actual goings-on or any real characterization. There were, however, some moments that had you holding your breath because it's surprisingly easy to fall in with the characters. It flew by, hardly noticed how fast. Pick it up and finish in an afternoon. You won't regret it, but you won't remember it either. I feel like this minimalist style was much better utilized in Ogawa's Revenge collection, but that might just be me because I'm not the biggest fan of straight romance.
review 2: What a beautiful, powerful, sweet litt
... morele book. In this novel the Professor has had an accident leaving him unable to remember something that happened over 80 minutes ago. The housekeeper is engaged to take care of him - she develops a deep friendship with him (mainly over her son, who the professor calls “root” and baseball). The professor is a math genius. He uses math to both notice and build on their connections. His use of math reveals the hidden beauty that is caught in all our created order. I’m very glad I read this book. less
