review 1: I got this book as part of being in a book club in which we exchange books and tell each other a little something about the book we're giving away. I wouldn't say this book was sinister, but it was certainly creepy, dark and had dangerous elements. I found this book to be quite humane, portraying some depressing aspects of life that are usually kept deeply repressed. Even though this book is from a Japanese author, the story is universal and seems like it could happen anywhere. This book reminded me very much of "Stay Awake" by Dan Chaon, very disturbing terrain being explore by both writers. Interesting story structure employed by Ogawa, all the stories are intertwined and isn't that how life kinda is?
review 2: This is a collection of short stories. Eac
... moreh story builds on the ones previous as the story will incorporate something from the previous stories linking them to each other. Also each story has a twist all its own. After reading the last story, you realize you have come full circle back to the beginning. I love this type of book. Some of the stories made me go Wow and some made me chuckle with the unexpected twists. The darkness of humanity is illustrated in quite ordinary circumstances. really a fun read. less
