review 1: This series is starting to take a darker route. The summary concept: "A bestselling romantic comedy!" is not so accurate on the comedic side. While there is some humor, is is less a focus than past volumes. This really sets the stage for a more mature plotline.Ren is struggling with his role as Cain. Flashbacks of his time in America torment him. Yet lucky for him, Kyoko is there for him. She still is oblivious to the depth of his despair but she knows things are not right. She is also beginning to care more for Ren than she is willing to admit. There roles are brother and sister are both amusing and disturbing. Kyoko is doing an amazing job with her character but working with Ren has her constantly second guessing every move she makes! Then there is the Presiden... moret's small, but potentially crucial role. He still sees them both as wounded and he has hopes for a desired outcome between them. His role is small but clues us in on what to likely expect to come in time. The further into this series, the more on edge I am for the next volume. This one was good but left so much unexplained as of yet. I am eager to see how it plays out.
review 2: Give me a volume about Ren and Kyoko, and I'll be a happy camper. I glad that we are slowing getting to know more about Ren's past (along with Kyoko), and just wish we could know it faster, but in the end, it means more if Kyoko helps Ren figure out how to move on past his past. It's also nice to get some clarity from the President on why he assigned Kyoko to help Ren: Yes, he thinks Kyoko is perhaps the only person who can stop Ren from going off the deep end as he accesses his past for this role, but the President is also hoping that Ren won't be able to hold back physically with Kyoko if they are acting as Cain and Setsuka. And even though it's acting, the President is betting on the fact that being together romantically with Ren in any form will "kickstart" Kyoko's feelings towards him. Which could very possibly be true.Of course, Ren really does go off the deep end when Murasame calls him a mixed blood, cold, bloody-thirsty killer, and it really is only the sound of Kyoko's voice that brings him back before he truly hurts Murasame. And while the director plays it off and assumes that trigger was something that Ren built into Cain's character, Kyoko can see beneath the surface to the truth: that killer dig didn't get under Cain's skin, it got under REN'S. or Kuon's? That part still confuses me. Either way, Kyoko could tell that it wasn't an act for Ren at that point, and did what the President suggested: treat Ren as Setsuka would treat Cain, and he'll pull through. She takes silly photos of his makeup, and walks in on his bath with no hesitation. Something is obviously wrong, though, and Kyoko can tell. She just can't figure out how to help.If you've been following my reviews, you'll remember that I love it when the boys love Kyoko, especially because she is so clueless about it. Poor Ren is so busy dealing with his own demons, it almost doesn't seem fair that he has to somehow complete for Kyoko's attention. Of course, if they could honestly see how each other were feeling, Ren and Kyoko would know that they each care for one another more than anyone else, but that's not reality. And so Ren has to deal with guys like Kijima, who seems to enjoy rubbing it in Ren's face that he has Kyoko's email address. The looks on Ren and his manager's faces when Kyoko (innocently) returns Kijima email was priceless. They are clearly shocked that she even replied, but clearly Kyoko has demonstrated in the past that she doesn't see Kijima as someone romantically pursuing her. Plus, the lure of the decorated glitter email was too strong!I was excited to see the brief return of Sho Fuwa, too! I can't help but love that kid and his crazy obsession with Kyoko. I knew he had to eventually see the footage from when Kijima dressed Kyoko up beautifully, and I knew when he did it would drive him crazy. I can't wait to see what happens when he gets to Kyoko's school.I'm ready for the next volume! Hopefully they continue to get better and better as relationships get closer and we find out more and more about Ren's past. less
