review 1: You know this is going to be an exceptional story when the main character opens the door and finds a man from her past, named Lemon, on her steps. And the writer brings us into their tangled relationship immediately by saying she hadn't seen him since the night she killed her mother. Yvvette Edwards, in her first novel, presents that broad outline but her skill is the unfolding of their separate past, joint past, and immediate conversations. A glimpse into the immigrant life in London but again those are only the edges. This is a deep and at times disturbing look into a family, male and female relationships and a woman who is so isolated emotionally. And the question Edwards presents to this woman she named Jinx is can and how will she survive and in the end will she be al... moreone again. Wonderfully written.
review 2: This novel started a bit slowly for me but the detail in the first 2/3 of the book really allowed the end to be clearly connected. The nature of guilt, and the impact a sense of guilt can have on many lives is explored. Particularly, the impact a misplaced sense of guilt has on a teenager who does not have the experience or capacity to completely comprehend her circumstances or her role in them. less
