review 1: 3,5-4 starsI like Z.A. Maxfield. She is a go to for comfort reads for me. You know you'll get some laughs, sweetness, hot sex, light on the angst or drama and above all a sweet happy ending! All of this holds true for Family Unit.Richard is a 45 yr old out and proud grandfather, whose life revolves solely around his grandson Nick, whom he has custody of. He has not had a relationship in years, devoting himself and his entire life to creating a safe and happy home for Nick to grow up in.Logan - also in his late forties - is a marine colonel, who has spent his entire life in the Don't ask, Don't tell policy of the army. He is now retired to California, living in the house his partner Dan left him at his death years earlier. The two meet when Richard is taking his grandson... more trick or treating on Halloween. There is instant attraction, but Logan believes Richard to be straight - due to the kid - and Richard has been out of the game for so long, that he just doesn't believe anyone could be interested in him.Their relationship evolves very quickly, which kind of left me a bit torn. On the one hand, I feel that they are old enough to know what they want and go after it. On the other hand I feel, that their age should make them be more cautious with their hearts - but that's probably just me projecting my own (aging) feelings ;-)This story is about family, the good and the bad and the quite ugly. The family we are born with, and the family we choose to create. Nick is quite a believable kid, who naturally reacts when he suddenly finds himself sharing his grandfathers attention with the new boyfriend. And as Richards life revolves around him, his role in the story is obviously important and quite big. There is quite a lot of drama - especially at the end of the story - but I am happy to say, that the author didn't make homophobia a big plot line as well. I had been afraid that the couple would meet huge resistance, but luckily Richard is well accepted and respected in his community and his friends back him all the way. Although Logan does get a lovely little stab at the hypocrisy of some people, which I thoroughly enjoyed. There were a few editing errors, and I would have enjoyed more on Logans family and background, for them to meet Richard and Nick, and the ending felt a bit rushed to me. As if there was a chapter missing before the epilogue. But all in all it was a very enjoyable read and it was so nice to read about guys in their 40ies finding love and happiness - not to mention hot sex!
review 2: This is a story of two different men who find each other and love. Logan Wilde is a retired marine cornel who is living in the house that his late partner willed to him. Logan has lived a strict and disciplined life, he loves his partner, who died of cancer and misses his family that lives on the east coast. Logan isn't used to California and hasn't made any friends in the suburban neighborhood where he lives. This soon changes on a Halloween night when Richard Hunter and his grandson, Nick and friends come to his house trick or treating. Logan is known as crazy soldier guy because of his strict behavior and enforcements of rules. The kids are of course afraid to go to the house, but they do and get scared of Logan dressed as a scarecrow. Logan hears Richard's carefree laugh as he says a few words to him and runs after the kids and is intrigued. After a series of events the two men meet and find though both have different outlooks on life, they can't fight their attraction to each other. Nick depends on Richard and though he likes Logan at first, notices his grandfather's attraction to Logan. The heart-breaking details as to why Richard has custody of Nick, I won't say, other then there is a real reason for the child's fear and apprehension for his grandfather to have a relationship with Logan. This is a wonderful story of all three characters getting a second chance of love and becoming a family. This is a unique story because the main characters in this story are older, mid to late forties, and more established in their careers and life experiences. This is a well written story and indeed a good read! less
