review 1: 4/5A very good LGBT romance fiction by Z.A Maxfield.Hard hitting, often rather brutal as she confronts ingrained homophobia, and the damage it can reek on peoples lives. But also touches on romance, love and the impetus inside all decent people to seek out and do 'the right thing'.Characterisation: effective, never boring. The main protagonists back stories are never rushed into, instead gently revealed to one another as one would expect between strangers feeling a powerful sexual desire toward one another.Plot: typical Maxfield, it follows her set pattern of 'opening twist' then 'double twist' at the end. It works, with the right amount of bitter sweetness to keep the raw edginess of the novel alive, even at the conclusion.Originality: Proudly sits resplendent among some ... moreof the finest contemporary LGBT literature to date. It has to be one of her best novels of all time (possible exception of Notturno.. but then I'm in love with that novel of hers). Important lesson here though is the primacy of tolerance, multiculturalism and equal treatment. Hate is easy, atavistic, Maxfield is attempting to push the concept that identity and happiness isn't a set thing; with no 'proper' answers. If you don't read this novel at least once, you are missing out on a huge portion of contemporary English language literature.
review 2: This is not one of my favourite ZA Maxfield books, I am a huge fan and this book has left me undecided on how to rate it.On one hand the plot was very original - by that I mean the obvious love by Dylans ex russian mobster lover. He was a beloved boy toy - no thats not right - he was much more then that. I think thats what I find so refreshing. However one thing bugged me - it was a lack of connection between the two MCs. I dont think either of them could explain why they loved each other and that confused me as a reader. There was so much action and drama I felt there was a lack of romance. Well traditional romance anyway. The reason I decided on 4 stars is because I was enthralled for hours but also I felt that this book made me stop and really think about the couple after I put the kindle down. less
