21st Century Yokel

When we returned from our holiday in Devon back in August I didn’t want to be void of that holiday feeling, nor did I want to be missing out on the goings-on of the place.

It was rather good that I saw a special offer on purchasing Devon Life magazine. I subscribed as I’m a sucker for magazines, already enjoying 7 on annual subscription.

Anyway, soon after I paid my sub, the first copy popped through my letterbox. One column made me laugh out loud, so much so that when the subsequent edition arrived through my letterbox, the first page I turned to was the column by Tom Cox. Admittedly I had never read a book by Mr Cox, even though a well known author on feline coming’s and going’s, many of his books frequenting the shelves of many charity shops.

I asked my husband to buy me the latest book as the subject matter pricked my interest.

Tom Cox is to blame for my Christmas day passing in a blur. A lengthy 400 and odd pages in the hardback edition, but I was captivated from page one and read more than half the book in just a few hours.

I posted on Facebook: “Is it possible that a book can hypnotise? Or Maybe even use the power of the written word in a similar way to the drug rohypnol to gain total power of the mind and body. This book is surely doing this with me. Up to now it’s the best book I’ve read in years. It’s everything I look for in a non-fiction book – and more”.

I’m enjoying reading it because I am also from the Nottinghamshire border, I currently live in Norfolk, I’m vegetarian and have a passion for the countryside and nature. However, the main reason is my deep love for Dartmoor, where much of the book is set.

I’m really hoping there’s a follow up book at some point, even if Tom decides to spend his time trawling the council estates of Langold and scouring the redundant opencast mines of North Nottinghamshire looking for treasure, I’d be sure to buy it!

A laugh out loud book, my favourite christmas gift this year and enjoyment with every page.
