review 1: Wow, a NA novel that didn't suck! I know, I'm surprised, too! I thought it was an urban legend, but there you have it. Call off the Mythbusters, this one is confirmed. It wasn't a perfect read, because honestly it was kinda boring for the first 40% or so. It wasn't boring in the sense that it couldn't capture my attention, because Ellie's got an interesting inner voice, but nothing special happens for a good part of the book. Only when Flynn starts to play a bigger role in the story, it picks up and hooks you in. To tell you the truth, I was fascinated with Ellie's character, because she put an amazing effort into her self-destruction. I haven't come across a character that had so little confidence in her abilities, that had so little self-esteem, that had so little courag... moree on her own to try to elevate herself from the awful place she was in, with those awful people she called friends (call me naive, but are there really people like that?).Flynn plays a big part in Ellie's self-destructing and healing phases, encourages her and forgives her for her many wrongdoings (and there are plenty), but other than that, as a character he doesn't stick out much. The story itself was bittersweet, showing a reality that is crueler and unforgiving of any differences. I think everyone knows how it's like to be bullied, I think everyone experienced it one time or another, and we learned how to deal with it in our own way or how to stand up for ourselves. You may find this book unsettling, unrealistic, maybe even insulting, but I'm taking this book for what I thought it was. A messed up person messing up other people and her own life in order to pull her shit together.3.5 stars, rounding up at 4, for a different reading experience from what I'm used to.
review 2: What a beautiful book. Can't say anything else other than thank you, Meredith, for writing such bittersweet stories of Ellie and Flynn. Flynn is such an amazing person with Asperger. I somewhat can truly understand his struggle and although I know nothing about Asperger, I think Walters wrote it perfectly. Ellie, although being such a bitch as a matter of fact, her being denial that clouds her over her feeling to Flynn for years and years, has finally came to her sense when Flynn made his appearance for the first time in 7 years. I just love how patience and understanding Ellie is on Flynn and gosh, Flynn blatantly attitude just made him even sexy without him knowing it. less
