review 1: Just my kind of fantasy.Swordfights, magic and dragons. Those alone would be enough for any lover of the genre. But, Taming Fire is more than that, it wrought a fine tale of a boy who tried to escape his less than savory past. He face hardships, and death, emerging triumphant. A purveyor of a new kind of magic, he is mankind's best hope of facing the dragonswarm.A definite page-turner, i enjoyed the story and recommend everybody gave this one a read as well.
review 2: This book began well enough, although it crawled up to pace. For some time I felt as though I was trudging uphill. The dialogue was pretty stilted all throughout. And bits and pieces of plot and backstory were unbelievable enough to really detract from the story as a whole. For instance, (and ther
... moree are spoilers here to follow), why on earth is "Carrick the Thief" such a largely recognized thief for stealing a loaf of bread? Why do they draw the attention of higher ranked officials who have better things to do to decide to have him killed? Yes, I understand that it's this big story because they sentenced him to death for stealing some bread, but I still can't figure out why they'd bother the king and his wizards with his sentence, why they'd convene to discuss it, and why everyone in the kingdom seems to remember this simple fact. And still, they remember the name of the thief's son. And recognize what he looks like now that he's grown older. Maybe I'm missing something.Despite this, the story does get a bit better. After the run-in on the mountain after Daven becomes separated from the school, the action and the pace of the story as a whole did engulf me.. for a while. Even the time afterwards with the fisherman, although not quite as action-packed, was well written (in my opinion) when it came to the relationship that developed between the protagonist and his newfound ally. And then it paced downwards again, and although there was an obstacle and a goal, and tension was there, the end of the book didn't thrill me as much as the middle chunk of it.All in all, it has some good bits with amazing potential, but the beginning and the end didn't capture me, when those segments are just as important to me as the climax of any story. It was an okay read, but I've certainly read better. less
