The Lovely Bones

Sometimes the dreams that come true are the dreams you never even knew you had.

***If you have not read the book or seen the movie there WILL be SPOILERS***

The Lovely Bones” by Alice Sebold is another book that I read in high school. I enjoy re-reading books because I always seem to find something that I didn’t fully understand then that I do now.

This book was written then developed into a movie. I read this book then I saw the movie. It was a good movie, but I liked the book better. It gave more detail and I saw it in a different way than the movie showed.

The Lovely Bones” is about a fourteen year old girl named Susie Salmon, whose life was raped and murdered by a man in her neighborhood, Mr. Harvey. The book is narrated by Susie herself after death. She is in her own personal heaven and is watching everyone she loved struggle to move on with their lives.  She watches her family fall apart. Susie’s father and younger sister try to find answers after learning of her death. Mr. Harvey destroyed the underground shelter he built in the middle of a cornfield. This is where Susie Salmon was lured to by Mr. Harvey and where he inevitably raped and killed her. He left all of her belongings in the cornfield.

As they get closer to finding out what happened to Susie Mr. Harvey leaves town. They learn Susie is not the first girl he has murdered.

After a few years he returns to the town where he murdered Susie Salmon, but leaves in a hurry after being frightened by a police officer. Susie still in her own heaven comes to accept that she can do no more to help her family and sees them come together and move on. Mr. Harvey goes to a different town and attempts to do what he did to so many other young girls. Though, whether it be fate or coincidence, Mr. Harvey’s life comes to an end when an icicle falls from a tree hitting him and causing him to fall into a ravine to his death.

This is one of my favorite books even though it’s sad because things like rape, murder, and families falling apart because of it really do happen.
