review 1: Christian historical romance. I really liked it! I like it so much that Constance is just nice looking. I like it much more than the main heroine being a great beauty like in most of the romances. I don't think the main heroine has to be ugly but she can be sweet and normal looking (like most of us) and her spirit can make her beautiful to the man that fell in love with her. After all beauty is in the eye of the beholder...It made for a very good story and sweet read!
review 2: A solid read. The threads of religion and faith weaved into the story feel completely natural - more what I imagine people like these characters actually lived like than the secularized stuff of most historical romance novels. Gaines is a strong writer with an appreciable command of humo... moreur, characterization, detail, plot...pretty well everything that makes a great story. I'm happy I stumbled upon this item on her backlist, and expect to read more of her work going forward. less
