review 1: the last animal is a collection of short stories, most of them around 30 pages, with an eye toward connections, gained and lost, by human beings with these themes reflected, often, with the story's animals, who function as counterparts and emotional mirrors to these characters. some of them (the stories) are very emotionally powerful and others are sort of forgettable: such is the way with short stories, which is why you'll find me dropping three stars on them more often than not. what a lousy review. if abby geni has a strength, its in pulling human moments that feel counter to what our narrative intuition is from what seems like traditional narrative fare. will read her novel when it comes out, but it wont be on top of my list.
review 2: The first five storie
... mores made such a strong impression that I couldn't shut up about them, really bugling the hell out of one in particular. Then I read the sixth. And the seventh. And the rest. It's a fantastic debut that just seems to get a little winded on the last lap. Geni's correlative thread is a conceit that is far more subtle and interesting than the publisher synopsis would lead you to believe and I enjoyed reading it a great deal...I simply wish I'd enjoyed finishing it for reasons other than to move on to the next book by the bed. less
