review 1: The zombies are mostly part of the setting; this is a more an espionage/war story. Good pace, page-turning story, although I wouldn't call it brilliant. What I would call brilliant? The main character is a woman. Having read the whole book, I have only a vague idea of what she looks like. I don't know how long her legs are, how pert and large/perfect sized her breasts are, or any other details beyond her solid leadership and mad "get us out of this mess" skills. She leads a mercenary team of mostly men, and there was not a single rationalization as to why they'd willing follow a woman. Thank you, Mr. Baker for writing a book that passes the Bechdel Test with flying colors! Now, I wish I weren't so excited to read an action/adventure book that finally treats female characte... morers as equal to male characters, because it sort of makes me sad that this might be the first for me.
review 2: Two simple points... first of all, when writing a book catered to men that features a female main character(s) MAKE THEM LIKEABLE, not overly feminist overly tough grizzled mercenaries who can do anything a man can do but better, (such an annoying cliche') and second of all do your damn research, women are not allowed as frontline INFANTRY soldiers in the british army and are therefore very unlikely to be battle hardened. The action scenes were full of repetition, the supporting characters were dull and cliche'd and the finale ridiculously implausible, for those who have read and enjoyed outpost, (like myself) give this a miss, it has none of the suspense or charm of the original, the only interesting parts seem to come from logs of the discovery of the virus and the fate of those unfortunate enough to discover it, however even this does little to enrich the story and is handled clumsily at best. Let's hope Adam Baker's next outing lives up to the high (although not exactly genre re-defining) standards set by Outpost. less
