review 1: WOW!!! This is the best thing I've read in a long time. I found it really hard to put down every time. It really reminded me of the movie The Thing, only better. I loved the characters and the setting. Most apocalyptic stuff is set in major cities where the characters are amidst all the drama, but here the main protagonists are away from it all on an oil refinery in the Arctic Circle, with no real idea what has happened to the rest of the world. That sense of isolation comes through really well. The first part of the book reminded me of Stephen King - the way the characters interacted and reacted to the situation without really understanding exactly what has happened. Then the apocalypse catches up to them and that's when the action really starts. The book moves from one s... moreet piece to another with relentless pacing, similar to Matthew Reilly's writing style. I really enjoyed the evolution of the main character, Jane - from fat, suicidal priest to deadly warrior woman - and her relationship with the resourceful, hard man Ghost.I could go on listing the books many good points. Suffice it to say I recommend this to anyone who likes apocalyptic sagas / zombies / action thrillers. I will be on the lookout for more from Mr Baker.
review 2: I first noticed this book about a year ago while I was looking for some new books to read. I was attracted to the cover and made a mental note to pick it up at some point. I got an ebook copy of it and I was really looking forward to reading it. I usually pride myself on knowing what will be worth a shot and what will be a dead end. I am about 100 pages though this book and to be honest I am struggling a little with it. Overall it is not the content of the story, it is trying to be The Thing but backwards. The thing that I find really frustrating is the writing style, the author moves so fast over every detail that I just can't relate to any of the characters. The thing I dislike the most is the way the author writes from a strange perspective, like " she opened the door, she stepped through the door, she walked down the steps, she reached the bottom of the steps" ect ect when the author can be bothered to write properly I find that I am enjoying reading the book, unfortunately these parts a very few and far between. I will finish this book, but I am not sure if I will read the next two in the series? less
