review 1: I received Shovel Ready by Adam Sternbergh from bloggingforbooks.com for free in exchange for an honest review. This book was given a review by Entertainment Weekly that described it as death-metal brutal. I was intrigued alone from that description, all I could think was 'what the heck would be death-metal brutal!?!. I imagined a book riddled with blood and violence and scenarios so uncomfortable that I would often have to walk away. I have to say that on that front, this book was a bit of a disappointment. Though there is plenty of blood and gore, and cringe worthy scenarios it wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagine. This book was, however, good. I enjoyed it for what it was. A man who has made a makeshift life in chaos and rubble of a world torn apart. Though the antiher... moreo of this story had made a life for himself in the dystopian New York as a killer for hire, a far cry from the garbage man he was, he makes sure to distinguish that he does have some morals. He will kill men, and he'll kill woman because he doesn't discriminate; but children are off the table... 'because that's a different type of psycho'.A really good book. If you like your dystopian with a Noir feel riddled with violence and a dash of sci-fi, this book is definitely for you. A very quick and good read.
review 2: This is a clever concept book that is really impressed by its own cleverness. The dialogue is crisp, but the time and place are not terribly original. The violence is a bit overdone. I know, I know he is a hitman! However, the violence is just violence for the sake of violence.I actually found the book quite boring and repetitive and while it was short, it could have been a short story and achieved as much. less
