review 1: This book is a thoroughly enjoyable rags-to-riches tale, Nigerian style, and keeps the reader eagerly turning the pages. That said, the author's relative inexperience does show through. The writing is clunky at times; she did expertly capture the English characteristic of upwardly mobile Nigerians, but nonetheless at some points the prose was less than compelling. In addition, the characters suffer from a certain amount of one-dimensionality: the venal uncle, the virtuous uncle, the naive younger sister, the spoiled younger brother, etc. My favorite part of the book was the ending. Nwaubani cleverly raise our hopes that the hero had escaped the scammery, only to reveal that he has simply better hid his true nature. An admirable first effort.
review 2: You
... more know those email scams promising you a vast fortune if you can just send a "small" admin fee? Well here's a look inside the life of one of the emailers. Circumstances and poor decision making combine to draw a bookish young man who can't get a job into the world of Nigeria's 419ers, and the author takes us on an entertaining journey with him. But there's also a serious message about the struggles of ordinary folk to make ends meet, and the choices they have to make to survive. less
