review 1: I have to be honest, that with many people in my english class now starting to read books that are chinese-classics influenced, most prominently by the cultural revolution this is a warning to spend your time on books more worthwhile to read. I felt that the plot here was incredibly scarce and not supported. Also, I feel that Adeline Mah is taking the whole chinese cinderella story a bit too far and this was the stand point for me. I'd say that for books about the cultural revolution or is cultural revolution influenced, it would be in your best interests that it is non-fiction. This book left me feeling doubtful of the author and whether it was even worth the effort to continue reading books by Adeline Mah. Though it is true that fiction teased with some non-fiction alway... mores makes it seem more sensible and solid, the facts, history and exploration of ideas and emotion with the characters just seemed like an afterthought after Mah wrote Chinese Cinderella. It was really devastating because it felt as if Mah felt that Chinese Cinderella alone didn't get its enough sympathy, and had to be make a fiction book this time tinged with the cultural revolution. It is true that the book holds some compelling short stories, but Chinese beliefs of incarnation, their culture, and attitude towards particular things was quite biased and a bit stereotypical of the impression Chinese Cinderella left on me. There are ways to beautifully craft non-ficion into a thriller, like BOMB. And there are times when the author is simply too unfamiliar to cross the "bridge" between non-fiction and fiction. In all contexts and opinions there are arguments whether books should not be categorized into non-fiction and fiction, and I'm totally fine with that. But writing with it is something else, and I think that this is important for people who disagree to my stand, just like reading meaning and making meaning and how it poses to your audience is almost 2 different stories in itself.
review 2: i started to read this book because i had read two of the other books that Adelind Yen Mah has written and i loved them so much so i thought i might try another one.the category i put this book in was that this book teaches you about another culture because this book tells you the things about how life was like in the anceint chinese days.the things i found interesting in this book was that it related the Friendship , Family and Life and how she had woken up one day and reflashed about her past and how she was a talented girl and had friends with a orphans and how she was in the middle of different things in the future as it then related to Slavery, Friendship, Wealth, Poverty and Arranged Marriages because of the wording had climaxed from being a talented young girl to then being forced into marriage and then having to mix with slavery and poverty.the things i disliked about this book was that it had a real slow start because it got abit boring atimes in how the wording was so simple and suttle.i would recommend this book to people who like slow endings and then a big climax and a ending that seems to still keep you questioning about the book because this was mostly the three main structures of the book. less
