review 1: This novel was frustrating. Although it offered some cultural and historical insight regarding China's Cultural Revolution, the story was so linear from cover to cover with each chapter being "ground hog day". The 2 main characters were portrayed as strong, capable and intelligent yet their relationship was immature and naive...resulting in a sappy romance. The ending was entirely predictable and the writing flip-flopped between first and third person. Not sure if the latter was a translation flaw but this should have been caught in editing.
review 2: So I am torn, I didn't have any expectation nor did I actually knew what the book was really about. Most part of the book I kept wondering: How can the main character be soo clueless/innocent/naive even about
... more Men and Life in general She also was the only one being clueless. Most of the book, she is irritating. I have to say.I liked the historical context of the story. Yet not very describe. The beginning up until the point where she meets Old Three and his family, life in the countryside, falling in love is nice. But the many parts in her hometown, her at work, the many times she talks about her social background and social class and the many internal conflict with herself... were just long to read. Of all 36 chapters, the "plot twist"(about chapter 29)/ending pretty saved the day. I liked it. quite touching and sad! thats why I give it 3 stars! less

I loved this book. A beautiful and heart wrenching love story set in China during the Revolution.
