review 1: Despite saying I will start keeping track of where I find books to read/who recommends them, I have failed to do so. So here’s a book I found, possibly through the internet, most likely recommended by Carina Mackenzie (book club/young adult book reader/recommender extraordinaire, previously mentioned here), and it almost made it onto the favourites shelf, I loved the story that much.
As soon as I read the first few pages, I immediately felt like I was reading The Fault In Our Stars. I found the characters and their circumstances and the style of writing very similar to that of John Green’s, so the first chapter or so was a struggle. But yay for perseverance, because this story is absolutely beautiful.Written from two perspectives, Zac & Mia follows the story of two t... moreeenagers diagnosed with cancer, one with leukaemia, the other with osteosarcoma. It starts when the two are in hospital room side by side, and the story follows their friendship as it grows. Being a cancer story, I prepared myself for the inevitable bad ending, but it didn’t come. Much like TFIOS, Zac & Mia shows that regardless of your circumstances, you are still capable of living a full, wonderful and loving life. This is a beautiful book. I’m so happy I picked it to start my holiday reading.
review 2: This book is the epitome of what's wrong with this world, yet another spin off of "the fault in our stars" , a franchise that lives off of a disease and romanticizing death. You can almost feel the book trying to print a film deal as you flick the pages, its "quirky" characters that you've seen in every shitty book, the sob story of a girl who is so unbelievable and dense that a fucking wall would've been more interesting to read about. less
