I’m finally here! The last week of 2016! Go me! Week 52 covers December 26 – January 1 2017. There isn’t anything to include for 1/1/2017, so this is probably as close to a neat little package as I’ll ever get. As always, let me know if you have any thoughts or feedback. Barkskins by Annie Proulx – I borrowed this as an e-book from the Boston Public Library. I love this author. She always tells a great story. This is basically the history of deforestation in North America, a.k.a. how we moved in and took over a continent and basically ruined it. The story spans several generations. It’s really good. I wish I could write books like this. It’s an impressive tome and I truly believe that Annie Proulx is one of the greatest authors of all time, not just contemporary. That being said, I’m giving this 4 stars. I think it may have lost points because of the length.
Don’t Look Down by Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer – I borrowed this as an e-book from the BPL. I think these are secretly written by Bob, who clearly doesn’t want to admit he writes romance novels. I’m just kidding. Sort of. I don’t really care who writes these. They’re highly entertaining. This one has a one-eyed alligator named Moot. How can you not love that? This duo’s genre is definitely Comedy/Romance. It’s very amusing. I definitely recommend it. For a synopsis, go here. I’m giving it 3 stars.
Felony Fruitcake by Linda P. Kozar (read by Michelle Babb) – I received this as an audiobook from the reader. This is When the Fat Ladies Sing #5. I was about to give this a 3, and then there was the fruitcake song. This is so short, it was hard to get really involved, but I definitely liked it and it was definitely entertaining, so I’m giving it a win. The narrator changed in this one (not the reader, thankfully), so that was a little weird, but I still quite enjoyed it. You’ll read this, “Faster that green grass through a goose.” I’m giving it 4 stars.
Moonglow by Michael Chabon – I borrowed this as an e-book from the BPL. I actually recommended it to the library. I have no idea if that actually works, but I suppose if enough people ask for it, they have an idea of how many copies they should get. This is a sort of fictionalized biography of Chabon’s own grandfather. He takes family stories and turns it into a novel. I have no idea why, but this really works. Besides, when you’re writing fiction, I suppose it isn’t as important to have all of the facts straight. Actually, this even sort of works as historical fiction. I wish that I had a grandfather like this guy. He seems like he was probably quite a hoot. I’m giving it 4 stars.
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares – I borrowed this as an e-book from the Norwood Public Library. This is Sisterhood #1. Have you ever loved a movie so much, that you were actually disappointed with the book? That’s about all I have to say about this one. I’m still giving it 4 stars.
