review 1: I'd like to thank A.J. Lape for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I give this book 2.5 stars. I loved the idea of the plot: a teenage girl who decides to investigate a murder? Super original! Bring it on! And if you're into crime dramas with private detectives, this book may be exactly your cup of tea. The author isn't short on ideas of how to get her main character into lots of trouble. I loved the first chapter. It was very well written, well paced, the voice of the character came through great, and made me want to read on. Unfortunately, after the first chapter was over, the teenager protagonist started sounding like a 50-year-old private detective. I felt like I was listening to the narrator of Sin City. It may be because I never liked the... more voice of those types of books, but I immediately lost connection with the main character. I was hoping that it would change back to the wonderful tone of the first chapter later in the book, but it didn't. The other reason I couldn't get into the book was because the main character doesn't speak like a teenager. No teenager I know would say "I understood very little about the ways of the world" or "You could laugh at someone's witty repartee over their breakup...". It didn't help that there were so many side stories that it was hard to follow the storyline. A.J. Lape clearly took care to imagine these characters and their world. I think with some editing this book could be very good. Unfortunately I just couldn't get into it, but I'm sure the book and the story will appeal to many others.
review 2: Darcy Darcy Darcy where to even begin with her. She is definitely grade A stupid but you can't help but love her. This book is amazing and very well written. How did you spend your high school years? Maybe with a boyfriend or going to parties. Not Darcy Walker. She finds a body and instead of doing the normal thing and call the police she jumps in the dumpster. This book will take you from murder and gangs to trying to get a boyfriend. It is hilarious and mystery all in one book. I definitely recommend this to everyone. It will keep ou at the edge of your seat the whole time and not want to put it down until you know for sure what is going on. less
