review 1: This was a rather short story. It takes advantage of the fact that most people are already going to be familiar with Flavia and her surroundings and gets right to the point. It was interesting that Flavia's reputation has led her to be consulted in a murder mystery, and the murder mystery itself was a little weird. The pacing was fast, the suspects were lined up in front of us, and after a bit of snooping Flavia puts it all together and confronts the person who needs to be confronted, solving the mystery. There wasn't much meat to this story, but it was a nice snippet during the long wait for the next novel in the series. I'm hoping Alan Bradley took his time with the next book and made it a good one.
review 2: I was delighted to get a Flavia short story to tid
... moree me over until the next novel in the series comes along. And what a great little crime caper it is. A unique death, great character development, and of course a twist ending. My only complaint is that the resolution happens really quickly. Perhaps this is because of the short story format, but I don't think so. The denouement happened so fast it left me spinning and groaning for more. This is the only reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5. It amazes me what Mr. Bradley can do in even so short a space of time. less
