review 1: Sounds like an interesting plot – It is 1938 when a Hollywood movie star travels to Paris to make a film and the Nazis want to use him for their own propaganda. Although a very descriptive Paris of that time but it becomes tedious as does the characters and the filmmaking. It just didn’t seem to flow, nor entice me to know or feel for the characters. It was an okay read from an author who has done better.
review 2: Mission to Paris by Alan Furst is an excellent and intriguing historical spy novel set in Paris, France in late 1938 and early 1939. This is the period right before the beginning of World War II. The book is thick with atmosphere and captures the state of paranoia and fear that the Nazis in Germany created throughout the continent. The story f
... moreocuses on Fredric Stahl, an Austrian born actor working in Hollywood, who is coming back to Europe for the first time in almost a decade. The book details his adventures in Europe including romantic entanglements and dalliances with the espionage business. One of the most fascinating things about the book is how it captures the process of classic Hollywood filmmaking. The reader gets a glimpse into the politics of the old studio contract system as well as the creation of an actual film. While Alan Furst does a great job with world-building and character development, the settings and the people in these locations feel real, he is much weaker with structure and pacing. The book never quite achieves the dramatic tension it is aiming for and the pacing is much too slow. However, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in World War II intrigue. less

Very much like watching a 1940's film. I love the tie with Hollywood & Europe in that time period.

I did not care for this book as much as The Polish Officer. The plot had some unbelievable scenes.

Another good book by Furst - set pre WWII, just before the Germans invade France.
