review 1: I don't read much fiction but heard about this author and wanted to give it a shot. I read somewhere that this one was a good place to start. To me, the book started slowly. Part of that may be that it's broken into four long chapters so it seemed to take forever to really get into the action. After a slow start, things picked up and the story was interesting. I certainly haven't read much about the Balkans in WWII so I enjoyed that perspective. The end seemed a bit abrupt to me. I guess I need to see if there's a 'next' book to carry on the story. However, I may be done with books that recount the evil of the Nazis for a while. I clearly and happily take for granted that my local authorities are generally not evil killers.
review 2: Another pretty goo
... mored one from Alan Furst. Again, authentic technical detail which I like. Again the two elements that he has included all 6 of his novels which I have read: 1) the plight of the Jews as Hitler smashed through Europe, and 2) erotic episodes of the protagonist. The former is generally interesting and heart rending, the latter is boring and best skipped. This is another of his "spy series" that doesn't have much in the way of spies, but has interesting history about the onset of the war in Eastern Europe. less

An enjoyable read about Greece and smuggling WWII refugees. Interesting characters and plot twists.

Fun, fast, and digs around in an overlooked corner of WW2 - exactly on target for a spy story...
