review 1: Boring! Boring! Boring! This is a historical espionage/spy novel, but it isn't until close to the end of the book that the action picks up--and even then it's like a big fireworks display that just goes poof...and never becomes what it was meant to be. Until then, author Alan Furst, who is well known and generally praised for this genre, is just setting up the story. The plot is weak and too implausible to be believed, and the characters are all one-dimensional. At best, it's a beach book. But my advice is don't waste your money or your time.
review 2: This was my first Alan Furst book and I was intrigued by it. I was unaware of the series Night Soldiers. Midnight in Europe is capable of standing on it's own. The author captured the "feel" of Europe prior to
... morethe start of WWII. The casual way debonair, international attorney Christian Ferrar is brought into the world of espionage made me long for the days of the old Man from U.N.C.L.E. series although Midnight in Europe is far more sophisticated. The descriptions of pre-war Paris are wonderful, painting a picture of the beautiful city that is soon to be torn to pieces. We are treated to Christian's sophisticated world of fine dinners, love affairs, and interactions with nefarious characters, all in the name of trying to stop an inevitable war. Even though we already know that the war will occur, there is a satisfying ending to Christian's story that left me well pleased. less

I wanted to be more excited, intrigued by this book or to learn something. It didn't happen.

Listened to this one. It was alright, entertaining enough to help pass some long drives.

The book was easy enough to read but not very compelling.
