review 1: Told in the voice of an unschooled but sharp 15 year old girl, her world is overrun by zombies. She wanders trying to find small miracles while avoiding the dead and staying alive. She becomes responsible for a low IQ man. Her mission becomes to get him home. She is being chased by a man bent on revenge. The writing is excellent, the main character is interesting and stays in character throughout. The book is more about what it means to be human and what happens to people just trying to survive, and less about zombies. Beautiful, lyrical, and gruesome.
review 2: Good fun read. Possibly the most well-written zombie book that I've read, although sometimes the author tries so hard to make a southern Gothic classic that it slows the pace, but I'm glad to see someon
... moree write a post-apoc story that actually cares about the quality of the writing instead of just exploiting the genre. The characters are original and have some depth, even if they are predictably McCarthian and their outlines a bit cartoonish. There was were some holes that were not too hard to gloss over with a little suspension of disbelief, namely that 15 years into an apocalypse there was still power to the buildings. That's it though- the book is a cool read on the whole. I'd recommend it. less
