review 1: Citation: Alpha Oops! H is for Halloween, by Alethea Kontis. (Candlewick Press, 2010). 34p. Alphabet.Summary: Creativity at its best! Althea Kontis does a fantastic job of capturing the readers attention with her simple yet colorful illustrations. The setting is a stage for the letters to perform on. And each page has a different Halloween theme for each letter.A. This book takes a different approach to learning the alphabet. Instead of going straight from A-Z it skips around and keeps track of the letters used at the bottom of the page. B. The best aspect of this book is that the letters are not in alphabetical order. It forces children to really think and figure out where the letters go in the alphabet. This is further helped by Kontis keeping track of the letters... more used on the bottom of the page and the letter’s place in the alphabet.C. For example, on pages 9 and 10 the letters K, P, B, N, and Z are used and then subsequently placed in their corresponding places in the bottom of the page. Curriculum Connection: This is a neat book to use in the classroom for students to do independent reading. It is also a great book for the fall season in particular the month of October since the book is Halloween themed.
review 2: I definitely would have given this picture book five stars except that it was the equivalent of an ADHD picture book. It was too confusing, especially for little children who are trying to learn the alphabet. The letters were all mixed up and then the letter characters interrupted the story too many times with their (funny) commentary. I'm all for creativity in a picture book, but the way this author executed was a distraction rather than an enhancement. That said, whenever I'm looking at an alphabet picture book, I always look at the letters Q, U, V, X, Y, and Z before I read the whole thing. If those letters have good words attached them, it's usually a good alphabet book. The words the author attached to all the letters were AWESOME. Check some of these out:I=ImpJ=JittersK=KrakenL=Lycanthrope (werewolf)O=OgreQ=QueasyU=UndeadV=VampireY=YetiZ=Zombie less
