review 1: 4.5Very good. Savoy and Renee happen upon each other too often for mere coincidence (author pulling strings), but the romance budding between them is mild at least. I do wish Renee wasn't constantly surrounded by boys (many of whom are sweet on her, bother), although she doesn't seem bothered by it.I liked the setting and world and politics and how it only came out a little at a time. I'm still not sure what all mages can do, and the Catar overthrow didn't make complete sense to me, but I liked it. It took me time to figure out what the Family was.Renee can barely keep up with the boys; she is weak. Yet, she works harder than anyone else, but she still makes mistakes (her essay), and she has powerful choices to make between friends and duty. This book felt like 2 books... more, one in training and one in subterfuge and rescue. I liked the first better; set in the academy where the conflicts were with bullies or making hw deadlines. The second felt less real to me. One, Alec's personality did a 120, and two, it felt like guesswork and too easy. Maybe it was just that some details weren't fully explained (where did all their funds come from to buy dresses and stay a month at an inn?), or maybe Renee seemed like a different person (lost, a little lovesick, and suddenly not surrounded by friends and allies yet seemingly in less danger than before). Also, did we need the scene where Nino and street gang try to attack/rape/kill Renee? It felt cliche (even with that excellent rescue), and dumb. She is in a city full of Vipers and kidnappers and unregistered mages, and her only danger comes from some thugs who notice she is an unarmed girl?I liked Savoy, although he seemed odd. Sometimes it seemed like he followed the law and was so respectable (yay), and sometimes he seemed like an ornery, rule-bending young man (hmm). He does everything so well except stuff for his brother.
review 2: This book was incredibly fabulous. don't be fooled by the so-so cover, this book was perfect. Well, almost. I have three minor issues with this book: One, he shouldn't have beat her up so hard, it made her too angry for their reconciliation to flow nicely, if you know what I mean. That specific dialogue felt a bit forced. Two, there is no romance. Like, maybe there are some hints, but mostly zilch. Hoping this will get cleared up in the second book *crosses fingers*.Third, THERE IS NO SEQUEL. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but there is no preorder or upcoming book in this series, yet. Like, this is physically causing me pain here. DA HECK!? Those are my only complaints, and they are pretty flimsy ones at that. Read this book now! Unless you're like me, and need sequels. Then wait.Lastly, if there are books like this someone can recommend, please do. I am always up for this kind of book, and I need something to get by until this book's ( hopefully!) sequel. less

It was enjoyable but went on for too long; I skimmed the last hundred or so pages.
