review 1: What an amazing read!!!! Being form Central America; the history, legends and heroes of Central Asia and India are not common. Having found by chance the story of Babur and learning as I was reading (since I needed to find information to understand the story) was a great experience. I understand there were literary liberties taken, however the story provides a great narrative and insight on the life and struggles of a great tactician, general, ruler and founder of an empire.I recommend this book to all who wish to learn more of how the world as a whole has changed by the efforts and lives of those so far away.
review 2: Being an Indian, one grows up reading about Moghul Dynasty in classroom history sessions. We remember the lineage way better than our own (obvi
... moreous reason being one doesn't have to reproduce one's own lineage in ones exam paper, unless we are talking about Prince Charles, taking the exam!).Babur, however was a slightly lesser known figure out of the lot, since he invaded and set up the dynasty towards the end of his life and only things known about are the various wars he fought to reach Delhi, including First War of Panipat (I still remember those wars with shudder, no........ not for the gore and bloodshed........ but for the sleepless times mugging up the details gave me). This book brought in the growing up, ambitions, wars, victories, losses, personal glimpses of Babur's life before he reached india. Wonderfully researched and written beautifully, this books will force one to see Babur's view point too. A great aid in writing this book has been Baburnama, Babur's own disjointed memoirs. However, in addition the Author has put in a lot of additional research and lot of feelings with his beautiful descriptions of the land, which he actually travelled before he wrote the book. The reading of this book made Babur feel more human than the historic turbanned image of the history book.Go, read it! :-) less
