review 1: The Andalucian Friend 5 stars--pick an innocent, well-meaning nurse, single mother devoted to cool teenage son, and make her the center of an international crime smuggling intrigue--add a dash of corrupt police officers, the usual grasping and greedy cohort and keep the pace at top twist and you've got a great read. When I re-read, I will add notes to the list of characters at the beginning, and put down one or two that were omitted. But using one central character around whom the others weave the web is a masterful solution to a complex plot of a medium-large cast of international characters. Motive triggers are not ignored, nor are they endlessly given a psycho-analysis--even the bad guys are human rather than pure evil. Really a good read that will be even better on re-... moreread.
review 2: The Andalucian Friend conjures up memories of The Godfather, Swedish style. The plot is rather confusing and very few of the characters have redeeming qualities. Unlike a few of the other reviews, I could see the attraction that Sophie felt toward Hector; I do believe that he was struggling with the path he chose in pursuing the "family business" and was envious of his brother's and sister's life choices. I probably will read the sequel to see if and how Hector resolves this internal conflict, although I can most likely predict that he will have to settle some scores first. less
