review 1: Setting: New Orleans – Mississippi River; MacDonald home for 5 generations– 3 wings around the square / stone-paved garden; Vieux Carre (“old street”) to Café Du Monde; Riverwalk (around the city); A Little Bit of Magic (their mystic shop); Marie Claire – hotel; Eighth District New Orleans Police Department; Bourbon Street; Bons Temps - loud club; medical examiner’s office; Viola’s – elegant, historical restaurant; Underworld – vampire DuLac’s jazz club; Theme:Keepers between human and supernatural worlds; Characters:Caitlin MacDonald: a bit too much angst over proving herself to be a strong Keeper; tarot card reader; feels the bad wind – sisters don’t believe her; can glamour and almost be invisible; early twenties, a bit of a rebel, sneaking ou... moret and spending time in ‘bad’ clubs; met, learned from, became lovers with Case – until his drug use pushed her away – still has feelings; Ryder Mallory: supernatural bounty hunter; shapeshifter; follows Cait (she senses him); comes in as older woman for a tarot reading – Cait fairly quickly realizes she is a he; a Walk-in killed his sister 2 years earlier, he’s been tracking them since; Jagger DeFarge / Fiona : vampire, homicide detective / vampire Keeper ;Case and Danny: singers; Danny a psychic; drug addiction; Walk-in: aka Devas. Dervishes. Shadow People. Qlippoth; disembodied beings, formless archetypal energy that can take over human or animal bodies; an amorphous energy that craves human form, but once it’s actually in a body, all it does is indulge its senses and wreak havoc, burning out the body so quickly that the human host dies of stroke or heart attack – looking like a massive drug overdose. One is more sentient, and better able to hold onto one body for a longer period of time, directing the others; new Orleans a fun fast; first bodies inhabited were human tourists but extended to supernaturals too; August Gaudin: werewolf leader; Armand St. Pierre: head counselor of shapeshifting community; restaurateur; added sumptuous elegance for the Council meetings;Summary:Ryder – tentative, vagabond… but gives his heart to Cait; he finds a place to belong… and Cait gives her heart right back. They manage to join the supernatural community to defeat the Walk-ins; both the head Walk-in, and the immediate threat, then to place a circle of protection around all of New Orleans; Memorable Scenes:“She always felt that way, seeing Case. And Danny, too. Her feelings for them were so complex… Longing, despair, anger, protectiveness… And failure. As shifters, they were her charges, and not only had she been manipulated and controlled by the very people she was supposed to have charge of, she hadn’t helped them. Not a bit.”“Fiona was so good, so perfect, and Shauna so outgoing and loved, and their parents had been such pillars of the community, all the communities. Caitlin never felt she could live up to any of them.”
review 2: I loved the first book in this series, The Keepers by Heather Graham, and this one was no slouch either. I usually enjoy anything placed in New Orleans or the surrounding bayous :)I am amazed how the writing styles feel so similar among the 3 authors of The Keeper series, when their "other" books do not. In case you haven't read this series, there are 3 sisters in NOLA who are simiply human but are the facilitators among the Other species (vampire, shifter and were). Tradition has had them keep their love lives separate from the species they are assigned to help and council - and keep below the radar of the city - but in Book 1, eldest sister Fiona fell hard for sexy police detective Jagger. Middle sister Caitlin feels more strongly now than ever that a Keeper cannot mix like that with her group; in addition, Caitlin knows that shifters are notorious for their talents, both mundane and psychic, and notorious for their, well, shiftiness. Drugs and addictions are the norm and a shifter rarely stays with one person - they always move on. Shifts are done on the astral and that wears greatly on their bodies so their lives often burn hot then burn out quickly. Not a good chance for true love. When shifter bounty hunter Ryder hits NOLA chasing demonic entities that ride the winds on their way to inhabiting a live body, he meets Cait and convinces her to help him track down and destroy the lead "walk-in". She is as attracted to Ryder as he is to her but Cait knows he'll be off just as soon as he solves his case and she wants none of that. Its seems like Cait forgets her principles - that she should never join with a shifter due to her position as Keeper - and only pushes Ryder away because she doesn't want to be left behind. This romance should not be.There is great tension in this book among so many characters and species. I felt the plot moved along at a good pace and loved all the various personalities Ms. Sokoloff created. I could see wonderful spin-offs from these 3 authors after the next and final Keepers book. less

Three sister witches, New Orleans and a sexy shifter makes for a dark and dangerous read.
