review 1: One of the most frightening books I have ever read despite some weak (overly blatant narrative manipulation to force meaning in otherwise undeveloped character relationships). Slight letdown at the conclusion-felt like an afterthought in the Hollywood-style unraveling of who-done-it motivation. Despite flaws in the depth of characters, stunningly terrifying and impressive in how deeply Sokoloff can tap into the human psyche.
review 2: This novel is about a university lecturer who becomes interested in paranormal activity. I liked it in parts - specifically, I enjoyed the middle third, where the main character is investigating things. But the first third (she obsesses about how her ex cheated on her, moves across the US, and finds herself torn between a sexy
... morestudent and a sexy fellow lecturer) and the last third (she, sexy student, sexy lecturer, and token bitchy girl sit around a haunted house waiting to get scared) are pretty dull, and the ending is dire. Sokoloff built suspense quite well, but never delivered: one scene in particular, where the characters investigate a spooky puddle by, er, sitting around watching it for several hours, was as dull as watching paint dry. There are also some odd sexual moments...like the main character getting raped by a poltergeist. This has nothing to do with the plot, but it happens. Weird. less
