review 1: Sure, this post-apocalyptic vampire teen romance novel was cloying, but it made up for it by being turgid. The vampires don't sparkle. So...um...kudos for that? But they might as well sparkle because they are so damn hawt. Once the romance subplot takes hold with its grabby little claws, prepare to be reminded of that approximately three times in each sentence. Did I mention vampires are hawt?So despite a not especially original but nevertheless solid and gritty setup, Reign of Blood turns into alternating bouts of decapitation-a-minute fights and fits of girlish confusion and glee about--wait for it--how hawt vampires are.I don't feel cheated out of the time I spent working through this. Post-apocalyptic fiction has its own sort of personal hawtness for me. Blow up the wor... moreld, then tell me a story about it. I'm in. And since I spent zero dollars on this, I got an infinite amount of enjoyment per dollar spent. Or is it undefined when you divide by zero? I can never remember, and in any case this isn't the kind of review where I will perform math or science for your amusement.Just don't go in expecting a masterpiece. Enjoy the desolate landscape of the ruined future. Lol at the lopping of heads. Breathe a small sigh of relief knowing that no matter how fucked the world gets, you might still get lucky with whatever unholy abominations become the dominant life-form.
review 2: "No guts, no glory"Advisory: if you are squeamish this novel is not for you. I received this book in exchange for an honest review. The sense of duty to fulfill my obligation is my saving grace. The beginning was challenging. The descriptive fighting scenes were impressive, but I was not yet intrigued. For a lover of post-apocalyptic stories it is perfect. That, however is not my preferred genre. Yes, I found April inspiring. She is a machete wielding warrior with a lust for vengeance. She is hardcore and a devout fighter. Even her internal resolve is headstrong. The scenes are graphic and wreak of blood and gore. April is agile and merciless as she decapitates one vampire after another. Truly impressive. Nearly halfway through the story my attention was captured. It began with a hybrid vampire named Miranda. For the sake of finding her family, April chooses to be led smack dab in the middle of hundreds of vampire hybrids. That is where she meets Rye. It is from that point on that I was entranced. The rest of the novel was fast-paced and engaging. I read vigorously through the story, admiring April even more as she becomes invincible, and absorbed in the relationship developing between her and Rye. Then a war looms before them and is inevitable as it is detrimental to the hybrids survival. Though she won't hesitate to spill their blood when threatened, April's obviously not so adamant about eliminating the entire race anymore. She does continue to train with zeal when a metamorphic event takes place.....The prose is simple and easy to follow. The plot is innovative, as well as enticing as it thickens throughout the book. The graphic details are placed meticulously. Certain elements of surprises brands it unique among it's kind. I cannot finish the series fast enough. Warning: Will result in obsessive reading and insomnia! ;) Enjoy! less
