A Dark Faerie Tale
review 1: If people only knew her secret, they would think she was insane. Crazy. Why? Because Shade hears voices in her head. Sometimes they are so loud and insistent that she must obey whatever it is they are wanting or it just might really drive her crazy. Because of these voices she ends up running into some interesting characters. Jack is a Teleen, a part of the Faerie community that Shade never knew anything about until now. And then there is Vange (Evangeline), a witch. Shade stumbles upon their fight and ends up following Jack back into the land of the fey to see Ilarial, an oracle. Ilarial tells Shade that the voices inside her head are her ancestors, which are her spirit guides. She also helps Shade to control them. And Shade also receives unwanted news about h... moreer heritage. The man she called dad was not her biological father. Her father was a powerful faery. The most shocking part about everything is that she is the only one to be able to retrieve Santiran Water and bring it back to this city, Guildrin, to help keep the faeries safe from the evil Unseelie queen and her army. It is quite a lot for Shade to take in, but she has no real time to dwell on it since she must start out on her journey almost immediately. But she won't be alone. Jack and some other faeries will be with her to help protect her. And protection she will need because the journey is perilous and nothing is as it seems in the land of the fey. Enemies pop up in places where she is supposed to be safe, putting another kink in things. Shade ends up being blood bonded to a very reluctant former captain of the guard of the Teleen fey. He took punishment for his brother's crimes towards Shade and now they are stuck with each other. Between dealing with her reluctant Teleen protector, Dylan, a dangerous quest, and her powers just showing themselves, it is going to be a long journey indeed. This series is super addicting! Once you start reading the first book, you just have to see it through until the very end of everything! And the following books are awesome! Welcome to Alexia Purdy's secret land of the fey! It's a beautiful place, but also filled with hidden danger! It's a must read for anyone that is a fan of faeries or fantasy books. Watch Shade begin the journey to finding out where she really belongs and what power she really holds. Not to mention the men who are vying for her attention. And make sure you check out the next book in the series: Ever Fire!

Disclosure: I received this book in order to give my honest opinion from Netgalley, all opinions are 100% my own. Shade was an ordinary teen, well except for the fact that she hears voices, but who's splitting hairs? On her way home from school, that all changes when she gives into the voices and ends up meeting Jack. Jack isn't human, he is a Teelen Faery Warrior that takes the reluctant Shade back to Faerie with him. Shade learns pretty quickly that she isn't quite as ordinary and definitely not losing her mind when the world of Faerie reveals she is actually more than she seems and destine to be very important to the people of faerie. Alexia Purdy created her own Narnia in the world of Faerie and the Dark Faerie Tale Series, with characters of equal on par with creative magic to those of the classic fantasy novels and some of my childhood classics. As we travel Faerie with the reluctant heroine Shade we go through all the classic stages. Awareness of something being different about her, introduction into the new world, acceptance of the unknown and epic quest. I love Shade, her character is of solid character and strong sense of self despite all that is thrown at her. Her individual strength, although not always physical builds throughout the story and really creates a strong foundation for the subsequent books in the series. I would definitely equate this with a young adult female centric Lord of the Rings. I started this book in the late afternoon and continued until it's completion. This series and this book is something I would lose sleep over it's just that good.

This is one of the most difficult books for me to get into, the pacing was fine...but I could not connect. Shade is a high school girl who hears voices and they lead her to find out that she is more than just human. The adventure she begins in a new world is really fantastic, but I felt none of the relationships she builds are whole. She is too childish when she opens her mouth and speaking of open mouths, I don't think I have ever experienced the heroine up-chucking so much! There was a lot of outward dialogue and no inward reflection and made it hard to connect to her as well as with the Fey she met. There was almost an entire chapter where a character, Sylphi, disappeared... Or was forgotten about. Most challenges Shade goes through in finding out who she is, which never completely happens by the end of the book either, are never fully accomplished on her own! I was not sure until random actions took place who, if anybody might even be a love interest. The possible love interests aren't built up enough, and everything felt a bit jumbled and rushed!I may want to continue the series, the story and world building keep my interest, I just hope the writing gets better and the series goes on!
