review 1: I wanted to like this book... I liked the story of the haunted items that ended up together and triggered a haunting. But everything is so easy for the main character, Mia. Whatever she wants to do, she's able to do better than anyone else without much of an effort or struggle. Consequently, things started to get a little ridiculous as she gains bizarre abilities at the speed of light. And like the first book, the personalities of all the characters give the reader whiplash as they change direction without warning.
review 2: This series is just ridiculous in that it is unbelievably implausible, throws all but the supernatural kitchen sink at you, has poor dialogue, and tends to not really explore the interpersonal issues it purports to explore (e.g. central... more couple breaks up with no warning and flimsy post-hoc excuses), but yet is engaging. This book was chockful of ghosts and paranormal stuff. Seriously, we had not one, not two, but 6 separate ghosts running around -- some just there for the heck of it and having nothing per se to do with the main story line -- a possessed stuffed toy (in the least scary stuffed animal experience ever), haunted rocking chairs, and some possession. I think that the overkill actually is meant to be entertaining and I find it really is. Even with dueling ghosts that shoot real bullets (see the kitchen sink reference above), ludicrous in this context (!), I found myself engaged with this story and series. I am not sure how Aaron is doing it, but I am unfortunately hooked. I am onto book three even though my literary fibers are screaming I shouldn't like this. less
