review 1: A lighthearted mystery with a minimal amount of blood and gore. Cute, if not predictable at times. This story could have been set anywhere, so I don't know why the author chose New York - a city she obviously doesn't know geographically or culturally. At one point, some young hoodlums approach the main character and say "Yo, what's up, pretty lady". Really? That's how she thinks New York youth talk? Good grief. This certainly isn't high literature, but nice to cosy up with in the evening.
review 2: I really thought this was a very good beginning of a new cozy series. Meet Darla Pettison, a woman who lived in Texas, but now is living in Brooklyn after being given her Great Aunt's bookstore to run. Darla lives in her Aunt's apartment upstairs, and her fr... moreiend/tennant Jake, short for Jacquline, a retired police officer, rents their basement apartment.Darla's employees are pretty likable and one can see the potential for growth. Darla also inherited her Great Aunt's black cat, named Hamlet, who knows how to get from apartment to bookstore, and back again, without ever really leaving the building. At first Darla and Hamlet do not get along, but as the story progresses, you also see the relationship between the two slowly developing. Which is good! I can see this being a fun relationship to watch!The basic story line is that Darla's first very big event a book signing by Val Vixon, author of the Haunting High Series, comes into her bookstore for a signing. While there, she is found dead. With the help of her friends, Darla was able to solve the murder! I am looking forward to the next book in this series less
