review 1: After she won the Nobel in Literature (2013) I decided it was time I read something of hers. I was in Jim Thorpe, Pa at a used bookstore at the time and this was the only title of hers left- I did not read reviews as I wanted to experience this great author with no other knowledge except the Prize. Finally, this past weekend, I read the book. I was moved in a different way with each story...the depth --amazing.
review 2: There were some great stories in this anthology, but the title story was rather insufferable- a kind of rambling period piece that lingered weirdly in strange places. I just didn't get it. While I consider myself a fairly voracious reader of short stories, I've never read Alice Munro, although she's considered the keystone author of the genre
... more. These are pretty straight-forward narratives, not a whole lot of risk-taking involved, but I suppose that's not necessary every time. M'eh. less

Not my favorite Munro story collection but nevertheless there are incandescent moments.
