review 1: I am not a fan of short stories, as I much prefer the deeper characterization one can enjoy in a longer work. But Alice Munro's prose is extremely readable, and her snippets of lives, illustrating the results of choices made or not made, are compelling. In particular, I liked reading the four autobiographical sections at the end of the book. When one is living a life, it seems as if the path being followed is a straight line. But in reality, the road is full of twists and turns, created by fate, coincidence, or one's own decisions, and influenced by one's perceptions or memories of events. That is the reality of life that is on display in all of Munro's stories. Dear Life is aptly named.

... moreely as true to her spirit, as great an encapsulation of her particular gift, as any collection could be-- its stories all simple in narrative but complex in emotion; at times quite humorous, often utterly heartbreaking, yet always affirming. Particularly noteworthy is the four-story suite that ends the collection, described by the author as being somewhat autobiographical. less
